Weyman Sellers/Notes
Background
- Sellers was a 1944 graduate of Albany and a member of Albany’s state-championship team of 1943 and state runner-up team of 1942 under coach Dana McClendon. Sellers caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the 7-0 victory over Griffin for the 1943 Class B title.
- Sellers played as an end at Georgia from 1945 to 1948. The Bulldogs’ record during that time was 36-8-1 with SEC championships in 1946 and 1948.
- Sellers was 31st overall pick in the 1948 NFL Draft to the Green Bay Packers.
Coaching career
- Sellers became Athens’ head coach in 1952, leading the Trojans to state finals appearances in 1955, 1965 and 1969, winning in 1955 and sharing the title in 1969. Fran Tarkenton was a junior quarterback for the 1955 champion while Andy Johnson was the star of the 1969 team. Both went on to become quarterbacks for the Georgia Bulldogs.
- Sellers remained head coach at old Athens High upon its merger with Burney-Harris to form Clarke Central in 1970. Sellers was replaced by his former Georgia teammate, Billy Henderson, who years earlier had been Sellers’ assistant in Athens for a couple of years.
- Sellers moved on to Jonesboro in Clayton County where he coached future UGA All-American safety Scott Woerner. In a 2016 article for DawgNation.com, Woerner referred to Sellers as "the greatest coach in the history of high school football." Woerner introduced Sellers for the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010.
- Sellers finished his career with three seasons at Pebblebrook in Cobb County and one at Lithia Springs in Douglas County.
Awards
- Sellers is a member of the Albany Athletic Hall of Fame, the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
