School district history
Atkinson County High School opened in 1955, combining high schools located at Pearson and Willacoochee. The high school had been planned since 1952, when the school system submitted its school building plan to the State Department of Education. Construction began on Atkinson County High and Atkinson County Training in mid-1954.
The buildings were not quite finished when school opened for the 1955-56 term on Sept. 5. Students and teachers were slated to move into the new buildings two weeks later.
Atkinson County Training later integrated with Atkinson County High. That high school, also located in Pearson, did not play football.
