Background

  • Williams was an all-state quarterback on Valdosta High’s Class AA championship team of 1957 under coach Wright Bazemore. He also played on Valdosta’s 1956 state-championship team. Williams earned 13 letters in high school football, basketball, baseball and tennis at Valdosta.
  • Williams is believed to have been the first to win GHSA football state championships as player and head coach. Even now, fewer than 10 have done it, including Hal Lamb and Eric Parker in recent years.
  • Williams played football at the University of Georgia from 1958 to 1961. He was a backup quarterback to Fran Tarkenton. He also played on defense as a linebacker and safety.

Coaching career

  • Williams began his head-coaching career at Dodge County in 1964. The 1965 Dodge County team finished 8-2, the best record since the school opened in 1957.
  • Williams moved to Baker of Columbus in 1966 and led the program to six straight winning seasons. The 1971 Baker team was Region 2-AAA West champion and reached a high ranking of No. 2 by the Atlanta Constitution. Baker also won a subregion title in 1968.
  • In 1972, Williams began his long tenure at Waycross, where he would win five region titles and two state championships.
  • The 1977 Waycross team finished 14-0 and defeated Dalton 16-7 in Waycross for the AA title. That season featured a victory over county rival and No. 1-ranked Ware County in the final game of the regular season. Waycross, ranked No. 2 by the Associated Press, won 3-0.
  • The 1981 team defeated Columbia 46-13, also in Waycross, for the AAA crown.
  • In 1994, Williams became head coach of Ware County upon consolidation and the closing of Waycross High. Williams retired after the 1995 season.
  • Williams’ record is sometimes credited with 240 or more wins. Waycross was forced to forfeit 10 victories in 1990 because of the inadvertent use of an ineligible player.

Awards

  • Williams is a member of the Waycross/Ware County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2011, he was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Personal

  • A Valdosta native, Williams married his Valdosta high school sweetheart, Carolyn. Their son Todd led Waycross to its 1981 state title and later played quarterback at Georgia.
