L.S. Ingraham was a school that was located in Sparta and existed as a high school from 1943-60.
History
L.S. Ingraham had its origins in a school called Sparta A&I, which was established in 1910 by Ingraham.[1] The school, which was located just west of Sparta on GA Highway 22, changed names in 1943[1] to honor Ingraham, who had died a few years earlier.
East End, Sparta's other black high school, consolidated in the 1940s with L.S. Ingraham's high school division. More consolidations of county high schools came with the additions of students from Warren Chapel High in 1951[2] and with Springfield High, which likely joined L.S. Ingraham in 1956.
Hancock County was looking for a new black school site to replace L.S. Ingraham as late as 1953,[3] but bids on a new building would not be called until August 1958.[4]
The new high school site was not ready in time for the opening of school in 1959,[5] meaning that one last football team was fielded at L.S. Ingraham. The new high school, initially called Hancock County Training, opened January 4, 1960.[6]
Despite Hancock Central being an all-grades school, overcrowding kept L.S. Ingraham open. It housed some elementary grades through the 1963-64 school term.[7]
Most of L.S. Ingraham has since been demolished, but at least one building still stands.
Football
L.S. Ingraham competed in the Georgia Interscholastic Association.
