School district history

Oglethorpe County opened as a consolidated high school in 1947. Previously, high schools operated at Maxeys, Arnoldsville, Crawford and Meson Academy, the latter being the school at Lexington. In 1947, all high school students were sent to Arnoldsville[1], which took on the name Oglethorpe County. The switch saw the rest of the county's white schools adjust their grades. Maxeys and Crawford taught 1-5, Meson 1-8 and Arnoldsville exclusively had high schoolers[2].

Under the State School Building Authority, Oglethorpe County built two new buildings near Lexington[3], one for white students and another for black students. These opened in 1955[4]. The African-American school, Oglethorpe County Consolidated, consolidated 21 small schools scattered throughout the county[5].
