Through 1965, the county had two public high schools, Alexander Stephens Institute and Murden. When black students applied to enter Alexander Stephens in August 1965, the school closed rather than integrate, with white pupils transferring to neighboring systems&lt;ref&gt;The Augusta Chronicle, Oct. 27, 1965&lt;/ref&gt;. Murden changed its name to Taliaferro County in 1966.
